An urban orchard and a glowing garden will host the flavors of The Jose Pistola’s Group and The Royal Tavern and Friends

PHILADELPHIA (April 2018)   The PHS Pop Up Gardens – the vanguard in outdoor urban oases – will return to their celebrated uCity Square and South Street locations this season, inviting visitors to enjoy inspired food and drink menus, educational activities , and an engaging calendar of events amidst new design elements and lush, vibrant foliage.

“At the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, we are committed to creating green gathering spaces that provide Philadelphia residents and visitors with a place for entertainment, enrichment and relaxation,” said Matt Rader, PHS President. “The Pop Up Gardens, and PHS work like Philadelphia LandCare, are emblematic of the positive change we can effect in the world when community and horticulture intersect.”

PHS Pop Up Garden at South Street – Opens May 3

The South Street Pop Up Garden, located near the corner of 15th and South, will feature delicious food, refreshing drinks and exciting events from The Royal Tavern and Friends, operator of Philadelphia neighborhood spots including Cantina Los Caballitos, Khyber Pass Pub, and Triangle Tavern. Visitors can expect a food and drink menu featuring favorites from each of those restaurants and a cocktail list inspired by the fragrant botanicals and herbaceous plants of the season. At night, the garden will be illuminated by Moroccan- style fixtures, twinkling lights strung through the Mulberry tree, and a variety of plants that will “glow” in the dark. Crawling dichondra, flowering plants, and rustic structures will create unique garden “rooms” that welcome visitors of all ages. Cinco de Mayo festivities kick off the season on Thursday, May 3.

PHS Pop Up Garden at uCity Square – Opens May 3

Returning to University City, the Pop Up Garden at uCity Square will invite visitors into a whimsical urban orchard filled with trees, strawberry plants, field grass, and mouthwatering fare from The Jose Pistola’s Group, known across the city for their creative take on Mexican cuisine. In addition to fresh margaritas and an extensive craft beer selection, visitors can cool off under large shade sails throughout the garden.

“After a successful first year, we’re pleased that the PHS Pop Up Garden will return to uCity Square next month,” said Curt Hess, Interim President & CEO of the University City Science Center. “uCity Square is a hub of connectivity for residents, students, professionals, and entrepreneurs. Outdoor games and comfortable seating nooks will provide opportunities for families and their canine companions to play and relax. A new covered seating area will be available to book for private events such as birthday parties, work happy hours, and networking events. Guests of all ages are encouraged to visit the garden throughout the season and during the Cinco de Mayo-themed grand opening on Thursday, May 3.

“We are thrilled to partner with PHS for another season of the Pop Up Garden at uCity Square,” said Joe Reagan, Senior Vice President, Development for Wexford Science & Technology. “This popular amenity has helped improve the pedestrian experience, promote interaction and a sense of community, and brought excitement and vibrancy to uCity Square for our tenants, neighbors, and members of the community.”
