When a coalition of Maryland technology firms and economic organizations applied for $160 million in federal funding in April, they had no idea whether they’d ever see a single cent. They held a project kickoff meeting in late May anyway.
“We all sort of collectively decided it was too important to wait,” said Dean Chang, chief innovation officer for the University of Maryland. “There are some low-hanging fruit parts that we could start now, with modest to no funding.”
Chang is one of the leads of what’s being called the NeuroQuantum Initiative, a group led by the University of Maryland, College Park that is competing for funding from the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engine economic development program. The Maryland group plans to explore connections between neuroscience and quantum computing.
