A special day designed to offer youngsters a glimpse into the working world while fostering their curiosity and creativity with hands-on learning experiences

The first-ever uCity Square Take Your Kids to Work Day was a success! More than 100 children joined their parents at uCity Square on Thursday, April 25 for a special day designed to offer youngsters a glimpse into the working world while fostering their curiosity and creativity with hands-on learning experiences. This event was a collaboration with University of Pennsylvania and several of uCity Square’s tenant companies.

The day kicked off with registration where kids checked in and created their schedule, choosing from a wide array of STEM-related activities and workshops, including Cabbage Painting with FirstHand, Coding Workshop with Coded by Kids, Coding and LEGO Robotics with the Philadelphia Robotics Coalition, Durability Testing with Exponent Engineering, and Slime Making Lab with Challenge Island. With guidance from uCity Square’s industry professionals, the children had the opportunity to apply their learnings and even bring home some of their slimy creations.

After taking part in the exciting array of workshops, kids and parents enjoyed lunch from uCity Square’s weekly rotating food trucks, followed by the opportunity to shadow their parents at their place of work. Throughout the day, parents and their children bonded over this shared experience and left with a newfound interest in science-related careers.

One of the parents who works at the University of Pennsylvania shared: “It was so nice spending the day with my 8-year-old daughter. She told me her favorite part of the day was taking the train and seeing my office. Her favorite activity was making slime at uCity Square. She has been bragging to her friends and her brother about coming to [my work] and how she wants to come back every week!”
